Spaying And Neutering

Spaying and Neutering in North Dallas

Based on the health benefits for your pet the staff at North Tollway Pet Hospital recommend that they all undergo spaying or neutering.  We take all our surgeries very seriously and do everything possible to minimize the risks that may occur when placing any pet under anesthesia, some precautions are listed below.

Spaying your pet

There are many benefits to spaying your female pet.  First, you will contribute to the prevention of the dog overpopulation.  Second, spaying will eliminate the heat cycles that attract male dogs to your house from mile away. Third, you will help prevent diseases in your pet such as pyometra (infection in the uterus) and mammary cancer.  Spaying involves surgical removal of both ovaries and the uterus.

Neutering your pet

As with the female, there are many benefits to neutering your male pet.  First, you won’t be contributing to the overpopulation situation.  Second, the neutering will eliminate or reduce spraying (cat) and marking behaviors.  It will also decrease aggression and often times prevent them from roaming.  Third, you will help prevent diseases such as prostate or testicular cancer and help prevent prostatitis (a painful infection of the prostate).  Neutering involves the surgical removal of both testicles.

We do pre-anesthetic blood testing on all of our spay/neuter patients prior to performing the surgery.

A complete blood count and serum chemistries prior to the procedure provides us with a better understanding of your pet’s overall health and anesthetic risk and often allows the veterinarian to detect disease that would not be found during routine examination.

All of our spay/neuter procedures include:

  • Pre-anesthetic bloodwork

  • Anesthesia and monitoring

  • IV catheter and fluids

  • Surgery hospitalization

  • Routine pre and post-op pain medications

  • Any suture removal if necessary
